The problem is compounded when sounds evolve in time -like any other human activity- but the written signs remain as they should because they are fixed in writing. The main example is English. Latin alphabet is very useful not because was impose by colonial powers, but because it works -provided that the sounds that represents are not much more from those twenty something letters of the Latin alphabet. Naturally, it works because the Greek alphabet came directly from the Phenician one, which was made as a help for merchants.
