Maui—or the Valley Isle—is the second largest Hawaiian island, beloved for its sacred Iao Valley , world class beaches, and views of migrating whales and green sea turtles. So, which is better, Maui or Honolulu?
Oahu and Honolulu are almost one and the same. The island is called Oahu, but the entire island is also referred to as the City and County of Honolulu. And with shopping, dining, bars, and amenities in abundance, Honolulu has become the visitor hotspot of Hawaii. As such, it is very busy, crowded, and full of tourists. Just on the south shore of Honolulu, is the famed neighborhood of Waikiki. The area was once the favored place for Hawaiian royalty.
Waikiki is famous for its beaches and ocean views. Here, you can surf, dive, swim, snorkel , paddleboard, you name it. Take in some of the most majestic views of Molokai and Lanai from Kaanapali Beach. With three miles of sand and waterfront, you can rent snorkel gear or a kayak, or take your pick of dining, strolling the paths, or shopping to indulge in everything this area of Maui offers. Walk the Paths at Iao Valley. Here you can walk the paths of the lush, green valley, and view the colorful gardens and river.
Whale Watching. From November to March, tourists get to see the spectacular gathering of 10, humpback whales. A boat ride to the Auau Channel has the perfect shallow waters for a nesting ground for the mighty creatures. You can also get views from shore at Lahaina, Kihei, Kaanapali, and Wailea.
Snorkeling tours take you to your pick of snorkeling destinations. During winter months, you can also enjoy whale-watching form many locations on tour. Boat Tours. There are still plenty of activities like whale watching and snorkeling with sea turtles, but it is a different type of vacation than Oahu. However, if you plan to have a more relaxed holiday sticking to the main cities and occasionally doing a day trip, taxis or local transportation will has got you covered.
Honolulu is the most populated and developed island and is famous for its spectacular beaches and great waves. Additionally, it has a couple of interesting historical and cultural sites such as the Pearl Harbor memorial, the Polynesian Cultural Center or the Paradise Cove Luau. If you like the outdoors, you could climb the famous Diamond Head and enjoys the views of Honolulu. On the other hand, Maui is a great choice for those who want to enjoy beautiful beaches and also spend some time snorkeling and hiking.

On both islands, the vacation spots are primarily located on the leeward side of the island, which is drier. Proof that the rain can get nasty in Hawaii. When we moved to Oahu, I was surprised to find that it has fantastic hiking options all over the island. You can hike to waterfalls, jump in swimming ponds, and hike up the most awe-inspiring ridges.
